A certain thaw from the Economy Minister? Bruno Le Maire detailed his strategy and that of the government in terms of cryptocurrencies in a long interview. What can we expect for the years to come?
Bruno Le Maire talks about cryptocurrencies
Questioned by our colleagues at BFM, Bruno Le Maire clarified the government’s expectations regarding cryptocurrencies. With quite an ambitious roadmap :
“We want to make the European Union the world’s leading economic area in terms of structuring and organizing the cryptocurrency market. And we want inside, France is the European hub of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. »
We note that the minister modestly speaks of ” structuring and organization », to covertly evoke the regulation of the sector. Needless to say Europe has recently turned its gaze to cryptocurrenciesand that the MiCA regulation it should especially upset the landscape.

Fear not, but frame broadly
Bruno Le Maire, on the other hand, believes that it is not necessary to have ” fear of innovation », and that it is not necessary suffocate the cryptocurrency ecosystem”. A particularly notable change of language, given that the minister has distinguished himself in recent years for a manifest hostility towards the ecosystem.
“We bet that when it comes to crypto-assets, we can combine protection and expansion. »
Furthermore, Bruno Le Maire says he is “proud” attracting two cryptocurrency heavyweights to Paris : Binance and Crypto.com. He estimates that ” other global players will choose […] France”.
DeFi and NFT as areas of innovation?
Bruno Le Maire also shared the government’s priorities in terms of cryptocurrencies, which he will develop in three parts:
- Attract global players and mobilize private funds
- to establish a sovereign digital euro (a MNBC)
- explore the potential NFTs and decentralized finance (Challenge)
The latter sector was also mentioned in more detail by the Minister of the Economy, who praised it indirectly:
“I am delighted that start-ups, but also large secular banking groups, have invested heavily in developing the potential of DeFi. »

Water in the government wine
This adjustment of the language used to talk about cryptocurrencies is obviously remarkable. In 2020, the Minister of Economy rather he saw a link between these assets and terrorismstating:
” For example: cryptocurrencies. You can go and collect 150 euros in a bar-tobacconist, then 150 euros in another bar-tobacconist, in the end to collect a large amount […] that an Islamist association or a fighter located abroad will be able to withdraw in cash abroad without leaving a trace. »
It will also be remembered that Bruno Le Maire it is a particularly strict regulation. He thus evoked MiCA last March:
“There are always criminal ways to try and avoid a ban, which is why it’s so important that the MiCA gets passed as soon as possible, in order to have a regulatory framework.»
The evolution of the government in terms of cryptocurrencies is therefore particularly perceptible through the voice of its Minister of the Economy.
