Alsace reaches the top five of the ranking, according to data collected by computer graphics Clara Delalberto.
An undivided domain. A few days ago the computer graphics journalist Clara Delalberto published about her twitter account a map of France with the names of the cities and villages with the longest name. Within the classification, taking into account only the names of the municipalities in a single word, the observation is clear. It is the Lower Rhine that monopolizes the top five places in this ranking.
Niederschaeffolsheim and Mittelschaeffolsheim in the lead
According to data collected by Clara Dealberto, the municipalities of Niederschaeffolsheim and Mittelschaeffolsheim are tied with no less than 20 characters.
Then follow Breuschwickersheim, Oberschaeffolsheim and Souffelweyersheim. It is only in 5th place, on a par with Souffelweyersheim, that we find a non-Alsatian municipality in the ranking. The latter however is not far away, since it is Grosbliederstroff in Moselle.
The Upper Rhine is also in the top 10 of this ranking. Obermorschwiller and Niedermorschwihr are the municipalities with the longest name in the department with 16 letters. Nationally, these are the 8th municipalities with the most characters.
14 Alsatian municipalities in the top 20
The Alsatian omnipresence in this ranking, however, does not stop there. Seven other Lower Rhine municipalities are in the rest of the top 20 of the national ranking. In total, 14 municipalities of the top 20 of the ranking come from Alsace. The first 14 Alsatian municipalities even collect the entire alphabet, with the exception of six letters, as noted by an Internet user.
A fact that is not necessarily a surprise for Alsatians but also for other internet users, while Alsace is famous for its long and complicated names of countries.
“You expected it and you were right, Alsace dominates this ranking,” says Clara Delalberto on his Twitter account.
A reputation that is sometimes even derided, as happened again this Tuesday with a humorous message from Sanef (motorway company from the north and east of France). ON his Twitter accountposted a photo of the Niederschaeffolsheim entrance sign with the following message: “can you put the address on the GPS please?”.
The names of the Alsatian villages had even been the subject of a hit song on the social network Tiktok. The clip of rapper Tchovo has more than a million views.
To notice only if taken into account compound names of municipalities, the classification changes widely. For the Upper Rhine, Herrlisheim-prés-Colmar has the longest name, while for the Lower Rhine it is Wingersheim-les Quatre-Bans.
Alsace is also less efficient in the ranking of countries with the shortest name, also carried out by Chiara Dealberto. For the Upper Rhine it is the municipality of Buhl while in the Lower Rhine it is Albé that has the least number of characters with 5 letters, far behind the winner of the ranking, the municipality of “Y” in Sum.
