Avoiding inbreeding problems and maximizing genetic progress in the herd, these are the guarantees offered by Choice through its new offer on gilt self-renewal. In fact, if the farmer wants complete and continuous genetic monitoring of his grandparents (GP) or great-grandparents (GGP) herd, he can opt for the Elite solution from the Choice On Demand offer. “ Choice incorporates into its genetic database data on reproduction (inseminations, births, weanings) transmitted continuously by the breeder, explains France Perrot, product manager of Choice international. We then provide them with a classification based on their index and a mating plan for each group of GP or GGP sows. We also process selection data and provide a ranking of selected GP sows. France Perrot points out that this new commercial approach to Choice’s self-renewal responds in particular to a change in demand from farmers due to a general context that tends to increase in herd size, restrictive transport regulations and health and increasingly important economics. ” With a national market that represents about a third of the market for women’s lines, the company, through its expertise, tries to manage risks in breeding to encourage the creation of value. »
A tailor-made offer
To meet the varying expectations of breeders, Choice has created four offerings in total, with access for each offering to more or less predominant genetic and technical services expertise. “The idea is that the farmer chooses a formula suited to his needs while knowing that, upon request, he can also have access to certain options”, explains Stéphanie Guyot, Choice Marketing and Communications Director. In addition to the Elite solution, he can choose to manage his self-renewal in complete autonomy by purchasing his GP sows or simply the semen of Choice M3 Large-White and M6 Landrace thoroughbred boars for alternative crosses. Choice provides a catalog of boars as well as management tips and guides. Depending on his goals, he can then choose semen from a pool of boars oriented towards maternal qualities, prolificacy or production. If the farmer wants full technical support, he can opt for a solution by introducing GP or GGP gilts in the case of larger herds. A Choice expert technician accompanies him in the fundamental stages to maximize the expression of the genetic potential of his sows, trains the breeder in the selection of self-produced gilts and analyzes their performance to define an action plan together. The duration of the contracts ranges from three to five years minimum.
