This new system follows the government’s pump rebates which ended on 1 January. BFM Business takes stock of the different ways to take advantage of it.
It’s D-Day for French motorists who have been eagerly awaiting “the after-discount”. After nine months of discounts at the pump of variable amounts, from 18 to 10 to 30 cents, today the government opens access to its new device: the fuel allowance, worth 100 euros. As announced several weeks ago, this is a more targeted measure. “The general discount has also helped the French who don’t need a car to get to work, the French who have an income that allows them to absorb inflation,” Gabriel Attal recalled during a trip to Nice on Friday.
“I’d rather help the liberal nurse who needs her Twingo to get her rounds than the very wealthy family who takes their SUV for something else.”
The Minister for Public Accounts also indicated that this fuel allowance corresponded to “a subsidy of 10 cents per liter of fuel on the basis of an average annual 12,000 kilometers traveled for business trips”.

A budget of one billion euros is foreseen for this new aid, which is aimed at the 10 million most modest workers who need their own means for their work. Two criteria must be satisfied in advance, namely the use of a vehicle (car or two-wheeler) to go to work and have a reference tax income per share lower than or equal to 14,700 euros per year. Concretely, a single person must receive less than 1,314 euros net per month, a couple less than 3,285 euros if they have one child and less than 3,941 euros if they have two.
Interested workers will be able to apply until February 28 by going to the taxman’s website where they will have to enter their tax code, their license plate and then fill in a sworn statement indicating that they need a car to get to work. We remind you that the allowance is paid per individual and not per family unit, which means that it can be requested by two members of the same modest couple who need their own vehicle to work. Once the file has been processed, the first payments will be made on January 27th.
