The Commission for Information Technology and Freedoms (CIL) has organized this January 25, 2023, an awareness session on the issues of personal data protection, for the benefit of the students of the Multipurpose University Center of Burkina (CUPB). This activity is part of the commemoration of the 17th International Day for the Protection of Personal Data, celebrated every 28 January.
The 17th edition of the international day for the protection of personal data is placed under the theme “Social networks, threats to privacy and coexistence”. Its goal is to make citizens in general aware of the importance of the protection of personal data and of fundamental rights and freedoms, in relation to the increasingly important use of social networks by populations.
- Marguerite Ouédraogo, president of the CIL
Regarding this awareness session organized for CUPB students, the president of the CIL, Marguerite Ouédraogo, suggested that it aims to educate students in responsible behavior on the web. If the internet today offers many possibilities, we must not hide the dangers associated with the protection of personal data and privacy. “Today young people use social networks a lot and often expose themselves badly. Our mission at CIL level is to raise awareness of responsible behavior, so that they can protect their personal data and their privacy, as well as the data of others that they will have to manage”, explained Marguerite Ouédraogo.
- Prof. Hamidou Touré, Academic Director of the Multipurpose University Center of Burkina (CUPB)
For Professor Hamidou Touré, academic director of the Multipurpose University Center of Burkina (CUPB), this awareness raising is a great initiative because if ICTs have advantages, it is necessary to know how to master them in order not to expose one’s private life and avoid certain inconveniences… He added that the CUPB intends to take the opportunity to establish a partnership with the CIL, in order to develop activities of this kind for the benefit of the students.
