The alleged perpetrator of the shooting that killed six people Tuesday night at a Walmart supermarket in the eastern United States was an employee who later committed suicide at the scene, police said Wednesday morning.
“The suspect died of what we believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Chesapeake Police Chief Mark Solesky, Virginia, said at a news conference.
The shots, carried out with a pistol, also injured four people, hospitalized in nearby hospitals, whose conditions are unknown.
This tragedy took place as the United States prepares to celebrate the big Thanksgiving family holiday. And four days earlier, a shooting in Colorado Springs, Colorado (middle) left five dead and at least 18 injured at an LGBT+ club. The club commemorated that evening the Transgender Day of Remembrance, dedicated to the victims of transphobic violence and celebrated internationally.
And ten days earlier, already in Virginia, three members of the University of Virginia (UVA) football team had been killed by a former teammate after returning from a bus excursion during which they had attended a game.

The phenomenon of employee shootings in the workplace is not new in the United States. From the 1970s to the 1990s, employees or former employees killed about 40 people in a series of attacks on postal services, so much so that Americans invented the phrase “going postal” to describe workplace violence.
