If the French are aware of the use of their data online, less than half take the necessary security measures according to a study.

TO just a few days before the European Data Protection Day, scheduled for 28 January, Kantar unveils its barometer entitled “The French and Their Private Life”. Conducted for the companies Qwant, Proton, Olvid and Murena with 1,000 Internet users, this study, taken from The Parisian, Tuesday 24 January, reveals the poor computer hygiene of the French. Thus, 91% of those interviewed feel “concerned” by the issue of online data protection, but only 48% say they know and use means to protect their personal data when browsing the Internet.
72% of respondents say they are aware of the disclosure of personal information during their personal browsing. However, 65% admit they are would not give up an IT service for data protection reasons. On the other hand, according to the study, 86% of French people would like to “better understand and be supported in implementing solutions to protect their digital personal data”.

Delete your history, use a VPN…
This gap between the French people’s awareness of the danger and the absence of measures taken to protect themselves is what is called the “privacy paradox”. “In real life, no one wants to be followed by the same ad all day. By accepting cookies or leaving data on the Internet, this is what happens ”, explains the head of the Qwant search engine, Raphaël Auphan to the newspaper.
The promoters of the study therefore provide a practical guide to “online privacy”, in which there are some simple recommendations: regularly delete your history, delete your cookies, or even use a vpn to hide its location. Because, remember the guide, “with each of your connections, leave a trace of your passage : information sought, products purchased, comments posted, e-mails sent… everything is listed”.
