“There is a way to heal”

When he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at age 46, Normand Mousseau did not want to believe it. Against all expectations, he managed to cure himself of this chronic disease with the help of a strict hypocaloric diet. He tells us his story.

Although this disease occurs in your family, were you surprised by the decision?

Yes, this is called intentional blindness. When I was diagnosed, I weighed 225 pounds and was not very active. […] I had an infection that could not be cured, so I went to the doctor and he immediately suspected I had diabetes. He did me some tests and it came out positive.

What kind of medication did you take?

I took the usual first-line medication, metformin. The doctor told me to basically follow the Canada Diet Guide, exercise and lose some weight. So I started running and stopped all food. In four or five months, I lost about 30 pounds, up to about 195 pounds.

What made you look further than the medication offered?

One year after starting treatment, in April 2014, I got tired of being addicted to medication. If I forgot the pill one night or one morning, my blood sugar burst immediately. It was painful. So I started looking for answers and found an article by an English physiologist from the University of New Castle, Roy Taylor, who had done a study on a small group of 13 people. He was interested in the link between fat in the internal organs and diabetes for 20 years. […] So he decided to test his theory, which assumes that weight loss quickly removes fat from the pancreas and liver, which then leads to healing.

Why is it necessary to lose weight “quickly”?

When you lose weight fast, the first place the body goes to get its fat is in the internal organs. What you see, in people who have bariatric surgery, which shrinks the stomach, is that within just a few days, blood sugar drops back to normal levels.

What is meant by a strict low calorie diet?

We are talking about 600 calories a day. I give some sample menus in the book, but it could be 100 grams of chicken with fresh vegetables and a clementine for dessert. Basically, it’s each meal with 200 calories and the idea is to always have vegetables to boost your stomach.

How much weight did you lose?

60 pounds total: 30 pounds in my first year on medication and 30 pounds in a few weeks on my low calorie diets.

How did you follow this diet to the letter?

Let’s say that blue fear has the advantage of motivation. It’s a challenge in itself, but it allows you to heal. First, this diet is temporary. We do it until we reach our goal and then stop. It is not for life. In addition, we know that by the end of this, we will no longer have diabetes because the definition of diabetes is a symptom of it. I no longer have diabetes.

Have you started exercising too?

During my 600 calorie diet, I did not exercise, but since I stopped the diet, I follow the recommendations of 150 minutes of relatively intense physical activity per week.

Does this method work for everyone?

The results seem to indicate yes, but again, only for type 2 diabetes, and the pancreas still needs to be able to function. If we are treated with insulin and the pancreas does not work at all, it is not certain that it will be able to start again, but there are still people for whom it has worked.

Why do not doctors recommend this method, before treatment?

There are several reasons. We are in the idea that, by definition, it is a chronic disease that cannot be cured. Although it has been known since the 1970s that most people who undergo bariatric surgery recover after surgery. […] Also, doctors are well aware that when they tell patients to lose weight, most do not.

What advice would you give to people with type 2 diabetes?

Not to despair, because there is a way to heal. For this you need to follow a strict low calorie diet. It takes a lot of willpower, but knowing that you can cure the disease and not control it for life is encouraging.

. Note that this is a personal experience and that the opinion of a medical specialist is still recommended before taking such a therapeutic approach.
