We are experiencing a paradigm shift that will take a few years, but like many emerging technologies, the nerves of war are the developers who increasingly need to develop in Web3.
For traditional Web2 developers, this could be an exciting opportunity to learn new skills. The main challenges for Web2 developers entering Web3 are accessible, but keep up with the rapid pace! In one version ofInternet owned by the user which is Web3’s promise, data is held by users, who can move their “profiles” interoperably between different platforms. Web3 developers are building user-owned projects that favor community governance over corporate governance structures, it’s a major mindset shift.
Currently, many blockchains are trying to solve various problems in the crypto space. Some platforms have the advantage of being decentralized, while others are fast and cheap. Consequently, there are a multitude of blockchain different with different purposes and applications. This leads developers to have specific skills related to the particular blockchain they rely on.
For Web2 developers, understanding and learning to work with smart contracts can be an early barrier to getting into Web3. Smart contracts are tools that automatically execute transactions if certain conditions are met without requiring the help of an intermediary company or entity. Smart contracts are immutable, and data sent to and stored on smart contracts cannot be deleted. It’s also the environment open-source it is often the norm. Web3 developers should therefore have a solid understanding of working at Github and using decentralized team communication tools like Discord.
