Here’s the new vintage-inspired motorcycle from the Harmonious brand. The least we can say is that the models and models follow each other without looking a bit alike. In its official speech, Yamaha claims more speed, efficiency and more sportsmanship. Always faster which, if you look closely, is almost the opposite of the current trend, in a world where everything is slowing down and speed has become sacrilege. Aggressive, XSRs are destined to get faster from generation to generation. More efficient too. It also suggests the motto dear to the “Faster Son” family, which claims the superiority of the new models over their predecessors. And, as usual, this one comes with a set of Yard Built parts to customize a solid base.
Since 2013, more than 60,000 Heritage Sport models have been sold, including the 125cc. This illustrates the hopes that Yamaha has built into this new version of the XSR 900. If you thought this was the way to quiet, cool riding and serious style, go for it, the grandfather is supersonic. The XSR is like the other bikes, it has the same performance, but you think you’re going slower because it’s not wearing the same clothes…go into shape. On top of that, the new XSR became a distant evocation of the ’80s GP 500 as its predecessor was still searching for its identity and seemed more out of the garage than prepared.
Indeed, the color, which you pay no more than black (and this is a nice gesture), is a desire to evoke the past. The back of the bike too. The saddle in particular, made like an XSR racing chassis, has a poly sporty style! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh take the race bike lines most of you don’t know about, without going to the end of the concept: the front is missing…there’s an idea, OK, but the analogy stops along the way, the front fairing is gone. It’s a shame, given the concept’s visual potential somewhere, we can find it lacks some, even if the gorgeous seamless frame alone makes for a particularly striking piece. But what do you want, sports cars are no longer sold.
So, the Delta Box tire dear to the brand, we show it and remind you that it comes from racing. As we were told during the bike show “to celebrate, not hide”. The reason why we show so many marketing concerns or rather. Whatever the case, the element is 2.3 kg lighter than the previous model, while the engine is tilted two degrees backward. Something to change the situation if we are to believe the engineers. Euro 5 and soon compatible with the A2 license, here’s an interesting formula on paper to say the least. Especially since the tank capacity has also been adjusted upwards, as 15 liters can be consumed now against 14 liters previously.
It’s very unfortunate that a streamlined motorcycle was not offered at the same time, because the Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR would have been quite a challenge there and there are no modern sports cars yet, although it would certainly have a future if we dared to take them out. But no, the handlebars are classic, even if the steering triangle has become more sporty than it used to be. Indeed, the hangers are 14mm up front and 35mm lower, which makes them more up front. Want to rest? You have a sport. There is still the possibility to reverse the saddles in order to push the handlebars forward 9mm and raise them 4mm. Sports always.
And the driver’s seat is either a torture device or the conjuring of foam on racing poles, but whatever happens, it’s hard as justice. We’re talking about it again because even with more pronounced support and a more typical slanted or even straight position (feet are set 2mm higher and set back 7mm compared to the replaced model and can still be raised by 14mm and moved back 4mm), And we are subject to the shape of the seat (did you notice that it is separated from the tank?).
Add a 39mm shorter fork while keeping the same stroke and we understand the focus has been on the front axle, which benefits from new radial-position brake calipers. These 4-piston elements still evoke those of Yamaha, but they are lighter and, to be honest, very original. We especially appreciated that the chain-brake starts with a Brembo master cylinder with a lever adjustable in spacing. Good sensations and accuracy are guaranteed. Whoever says more placement in the foreground also says more sensations rise in the hands and more direct and more precise reactions.
We appreciate the speed of lighter 700-gram rims thanks to Yamaha’s new patented manufacturing method for reducing aluminum thickness without losing any quality or stiffness. This also results in the deduction of the inertial force acting on the rear of the motorcycle. on the principle ? The lighter “ass” provides a lot of maneuverability, but also saves the effort required to place the assembly. And since it is a matter of weight, know that even if many items are lightened and even if the accumulation of lost weight appears to be very significant, only 2 kg are lost at the end of the call, bringing the XSR’s mass to 193 kg in running condition when fully refueled, i.e. 177 dry kg.
The general formula is none other than that of the latest MT 09, with a small piece of the Tracer 900 of the same generation: the swingarm. An element that is 60mm longer (compared to the MT element) and therefore theoretically less tension and more stability if we are to believe the brand’s experience and claims. Not forgetting that the wheelbase is increased by 55 mm, while the wheel angle is reduced by 0.4 degrees.
So changes were made (or rather a mix) to the CP3 platform for 2022. Lightened up in theory, more fun than the MT, however, the XSR went radical, with the adoption of a new version of the popular three-cylinder called the CP3. The increase in engine capacity is obtained by extending the stroke of the forged pistons by 3 mm, bringing the gain to 42 cm3. Above all, Yamaha displays increased torque and more power at all levels. It makes sense, but again, we note that getting close to 900 cm3 is interesting to say the least … The modifications of the engine are accompanied by a change in weight in the gearbox that is supposed to bring a better feel and clearer lanes. At the volume level, we take the stereo bowl, which was already discovered on the MT-09. The gases are directed down and to each side, but this time, the airbox doesn’t benefit from returning sound through the gills of the pseudo tank. On the other hand, the weight gain is significant again as it falls 1.4kg on the scale.
XSR 900 mod test. 2022: More electronics, less weight
The electronic package of the MT 09 is quite logically retrieved by the XSR, which is therefore based on a 6-axis inertia unit that allows play on the TCS traction control system, slip control, front wheel lift control SCS LIF and on the ‘ABS, which activates in the corner. We put all the mode in agreement: there are 4 levels of tuning for each, via the mode button on the left stalk or via the push configuration in the hardware-accessible menu. The levels are illustrated: the higher the number, the less nervous or reactive it is. Anti-slip also benefits from deactivation when stationary, while APSG (also known as drive-by-wire) lets you quickly choose between response levels in acceleration and power distribution. (D-Mode), not forgetting that of traction control through the rocker is carried down on the left leg and a button that allows to alternate between the two parameters.
This shortcut could not be more practical due to the fact that it is not always accurate while driving. It avoids having to use the grooved wheel for the right fit, which goes into more detail in the configuration of the motorcycle and display. Thus, it is possible to configure your driving mode and intervention levels. This configuration is always called up from the left stalk switch by selecting mode M. The small screen, which lacks protection against micro-scratches (a protective film is recommended), allows access to all common information and travel information. Correctly oriented, it remains readable, even in direct sunlight. This is a common element in the new family of machine translation that we know of.
New in the XSR is the adoption of easy-to-use cruise control, as well as an up-and-down transmission. This briefly and microscopically on the dashboard indicates that we are in a left-footed usable range. Not just athletic, the XSR also wants to be on the road, maybe a roadster…what a funny mix of genres. Could it be schizophrenia and a little irony, this XSR? In any case, she shows a certain versatility, but she did not forget not to be perfect, as we will see. Small adjustment of the mirrors at the end of the handlebars, a very high-quality element, perfectly designed, free of vibrations, providing a clear view, but bulky and much less discreet than folding rod-shaped passenger footrests and a special aesthetic of not having a low stand width of the feet. Another disadvantage of the mentioned mirrors: the large width that cannot be reduced: the ball joint does not allow the mirror to be moved. Lifting the file promises to be (a bit) mathematical as well.
The boot mounts without difficulty at a height of 810mm, and can easily be placed on the ground, with an advantage of 20mm less compared to the old version. Considering the dropped sentence during the bike show: “How do you combine a nostalgic dream about a motorcycle?‘Here we are ready to go by road. Finally by the road that leads us through a small part of the wonderful region of Tuscany. In the head the word ‘dream’ is flipped, the word is liberated, and the concept too.
